Busy vs. Productive

When I was in the employment world, I was very busy at work. Most of the time. But that didn't mean I was effective. Or productive. Or happy. Sometimes I had to appear busy, as the boss was around. Sometimes when I've finished all my projects, I had to keep myself occupied, like surfing the net or chatting with colleagues. The clock ticks, and time passed, and then I could break for lunch, or clock-out at the end of the day.

It was great when Fridays came. I could have my own time back again. But then, I still wasn't productive. I would go shopping. Or indulge in trashy novels. All the "busy" activities to help time pass. But totally meaningless in the long run.

I hated being in that situation. But I didn't know where else to go. I had more fears than guts. I wasn't happy where I was but it was always a case of "then where else is better?" Until I made "the change". The humongous decision to take charge of my own life. Do my business, to be responsible for myself.

Now, all my daily activities have 2 objectives:
1) I'm enjoying it, and it's what I choose to do.
2) It brings me closer to my dreams.

I am now truly productive. I plan my work. Then I work my plan. This is Happiness.

The Philosophy Of Happiness

I came across a very eye-opening article, exploring the subject of Happiness. Here are some points I gathered..

When someone asks whether or not you think you're happy, they really put you on the spot. Are you really happy or whether, in accepting your contented, untroubled life, you've settled for too little? Can we be happy without knowing it, without even thinking about it?

Happiness is striking the right balance between contentedness and achievement. If you're happy, you see obstacles as opportunities. In such a state, you can even cope with criticism. Unhappiness is when you're not in control of your life. As a psychology professor says, "The more you are the cause of events in your own life, the better off you are."

So who is happy? We may imagine that men (who as the social group with more money, power and independence) are the happier lot, but surveys repeatedly show that women are the ones who have greater "life satisfaction".

A professor of philosophy and social science found that only 20% of "life satisfaction" for both men and women was determined by job satisfaction. What really counts is to be close to other people and to have the freedom to choose what we want to be, and to create our own priorities in life.

Perhaps that's why it's so hard to locate the source of happiness.

It is said that the biggest block we put on finding happiness for ourselves is the fear of taking responsibility for our own lives, fear of change, fear of confronting the unspoken rules that we have absorbed from our parents and society surrounding us.

Psychologists have discovered that happiness is found not in eliminating the sources of our discontent, but in positive action - learning a new skill or seeking new experiences, however mundane, and rising to challenges and being in control of some aspect of our lives, even if it's only which route to take home.

Side-stepping the situations that make us unhappy does not help, but coming to terms with our fears and insecurities leads us on the right road.

Happiness is as complicated or as simple as we make it. Now go and get the life you want...

Be Yourself - Be Real

Tonight (well, more like yesterday evening) I learnt another secret of how to be happy.

I was at a wine dinner function. No idea who will be there. And no idea who I will bump into. A surprise chance meeting with an old friend. It's been awhile but we carried on like we have never stopped. After a post mortem reflection, a light sparked. The secret is to be genuine. Be myself. People know when you are real. And people know if you are pretending to be someone you are not.

You don't have to be a 'big-shot' to be respected. The most magnetizing presence you can create is simply by being yourself. Be present. Have a genuine interest in your surroundings. See the positives in your current situation. Be open. Be friendly. Most importantly - listen. Open your ears more than your mouth.

Heads will turn because people will be drawn to your happiness. They will be curious. They will want to be near you.

Inspiration For Success

Have you heard the story of the Tiny Frogs?

Noo...??

Well, the story goes that a bunch of frogs were in a competition to be the first to climb to the top of a tower. But the crowd of family and friends who watched the contestants were very discouraging as nobody believed that these tiny frogs can really make it to the top.

So they say "Way too difficult! Nobody can do it."
And they say "The tower is too high! It's impossible."

And so, the tiny frogs collapsed and gave up one by one.
Except for one little fella who defied all odds, and with one last huge effort - reached the top!

Everybody was amazed and asked where this little frog found the strength to reach his goal.
It turned out that the winner is DEAF!

The Wisdom of this Story:

  • Never listen to other people's tendencies to be negative or pessimistic. Because they take away your heart's innermost desires and dreams.
  • Words have great power. Everything you hear and read will affect your action - and success. Therefore, always be positive.
  • Always think: I Can Do This! I Can Make It!
The recipe for success: Be deaf when people tell you that you cannot fulfill your dreams!

The Law Of Non-Resistance - And How Does It Make You Happy

Just 1 day after I posted my previous blog, I came across an article talking about the Law of Non-Resistance. What in the world does that mean? Then when I read on, much to my surprise, it's as if the writer was reading my mind, thinking and saying my words. Here's the extract:-

"You may be in a situation you hate and that you are resisting, not realizing that it is this very resistance that is keeping you stuck and preventing you from moving forward in your life.

You need to be able to accept yourself and your present circumstances as it is. This doesn't mean that you don't want to improve or to achieve or have more. But you need to accept that this is the way things are now. And you need to learn to be happy right now and not postpone your happiness for some time in the future when you have achieved all of your goals and dreams.

This isn't easy, but it's vitally important. Because until you stop resisting, the negative situation will persist in your life.
You need to understand that where you are right now is a result of your past thoughts, feelings and actions. And when you resist this present state you are giving energy to it."

Sooo... in my situation, I was referring to my marital status. But the Law of Non-Resistance can be applied to all aspects of our lives - money, career, world peace etc.

Take a look at this site if you want to know what are the other Laws that we should govern our lives by...
